Since 2022, Trinity Academy senior Charlie Kirby has been a steady presence in RHP’s programs, from homework help to summer camp to swim lessons. Over time, he became a familiar face to students, staff, and fellow volunteers. As his involvement grew, so did a sense that he could offer something more personal to the students he served. Music became a central part of his life and he wanted to share that gift.
That idea became Keys for Opportunity.
Charlie began taking classical piano lessons 13 years ago, and his love for music deepened through a class and a transformative trip to sing at Carnegie Hall, where he saw, in his words, “God’s greatness reflected” through music. As his inspiration grew, his time volunteering with refugee students led him to recognize the opportunity music had given him—and to imagine how sharing it could inspire them in the same way.
“I wanted to offer the refugees I’d come to love something more than homework help,” Charlie shared. “I realized I was equipped to meet a specific need… sharing God’s glory through music.”
Last spring, he set out to do just that.
Charlie took the lead from the ground up. He wrote a grant, reached out to music stores for sponsorships, and organized a fundraiser. After months of effort, he secured everything needed to launch the program, including keyboards, stands, and iPads. He piloted the idea with a week-long summer piano camp, laying the foundation for something more lasting.
By September 2025, Keys for Opportunity officially launched as a weekly program through RHP.
Every Tuesday, students gather around pianos where Charlie and other volunteers he recruited lead them through lessons. Since launching, eight students attend faithfully each week. They learn not just how to play, but how to express themselves through music. For Charlie, the mission goes beyond teaching piano:
“Our goal is to give them a small glimpse of God’s glory through music.”
What began as one volunteer’s idea has become a lasting opportunity for students—an opportunity to discover beauty, build confidence, and experience the joy of creating something all their own, one note at a time.
