Every year in June, Refugee Awareness Month offers an opportunity to recognize the courage, resilience, and contributions of refugees around the world. While many people have heard the term “refugee,” understanding what it truly means helps us better appreciate the experiences of millions of individuals and families who have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety.

Who is a Refugee?

International law provides a specific definition. According to the 1951 Refugee Convention, a refugee is:

“Someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.”

This legal protection recognizes that refugees cannot safely return home and deserve safety, dignity, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Between Displacement and Resettlement

For refugees, leaving home is only the beginning of a long and often uncertain journey. Some are eventually able to return once peace and stability are restored, but many spend years in refugee camps or temporary settlements, waiting for the chance to start over in a new country.

The path to resettlement is often filled with challenges. Refugees seeking entry into the United States undergo rigorous and lengthy vetting processes. Security screenings, interviews, background checks, along with changing immigration policies can extend the timeline significantly. Compounded with ongoing global conflicts and limited resettlement opportunities, these factors often leave families waiting for years before they can begin a new chapter.

More Than a Journey Across Borders

Refugees are more than the circumstances that forced them to flee. They are individuals with talents, dreams, and aspirations. Refugees enrich the communities they join when they are welcomed and given opportunities to thrive.

They become students pursuing education, workers strengthening local economies, business owners creating jobs, community leaders advocating for themselves and others, and ultimately, our neighbors that live among us.

Their stories reflect remarkable perseverance, determination, and hope in the face of extraordinary challenges.

Building Stronger Communities Together

At Refugee Hope Partners, we have welcomed over 3,200 refugees and are currently engaged with 547 families as they build stable, thriving lives in their communities.

These efforts demonstrate the powerful impact that compassionate support, community partnerships, and welcoming environments can have on refugee families.

Honoring Refugees This June and Beyond

This month—and every month—we honor the experiences of refugees and continue striving to create communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and belong.
